On June 18, 14 students from Pakuranga College went off to the Auckland Girls’ Chess Championship. Although we were all nervous when we first gazed upon the countless rows of chessboards and timers, we each persevered through six matches in the over-12 age group and had an amazing day packed with fun.

Amongst the 150+ girls aged from 6-18 from 49 schools, our mental fortitude and perception led to us becoming queens of the chessboard! We all played well, with our school suc-chess-fully achieving the following results:

  • Ziyu Huang – Gold Medal, U16
  • Karen Tian – Bronze Medal, U16
  • Tracy Trinh – Bronze Medal, U16
  • Lilian Wang – Bronze Medal, U16
  • Cathy Kang – Gold Medal, U18
  • Jojo Wang – Gold Medal, U18
  • Jacueline Oh – Bronze Medal, U18
  • Ezanda Green – Bronze Medal, U18

A big thank you to Mr Keswell for supporting us throughout the tournament, providing a space for us to diligently practise at lunchtimes and even treating us to delicious macarons! We are all grateful for this awesome opportun-knight-y which has inspired us to study chess even further!
