Here are the highlights of the events of our Athletics Day!
On the 6th of March, we headed on over to Lloyd Elsmore and prepared ourselves emotionally to compete against other Whānau for the entire day. First up, we had our competitive running relays. This race was for confident runners only – whoever would win these would go forth to represent the school in running tournaments.
For anybody that didn’t run in the competitive race, it was now time for athletics!
The Peer Support Leaders led us around to different activities depending on what year group you were in: Junior, Intermediate or Senior. The day was filled with supportive cheering and lots of drinking of water as well, as the Peer Supporter Leaders and teachers always reminded us to stay hydrated. There were many activities such as javelin, high and long jump, discus, and shot put. You could also sign up for many sprint relay activities in between as well. The teachers challenged us; if we did seven of the activities, they would award us with a prize, and if we did nine or 10, we would get a shoutout in assembly. That caused some adrenaline to pump in our veins, so the rest of the day was a race against time to do as many activities as we could.
I asked a couple of people from different Whānau and they were all convinced that they were going to win the day. But when relays rolled around, everyone made sure that everybody else knew that they had the utmost support for their Whānau, and boy did it show. The relays were divided into Junior boys and girls, Intermediate boys and girls, and Senior boys and girls, then the Pegasus runners joined in as well!
The day was riding high for Rimu as they were announced winners of Athletics Day 2024! Congratulations to them, and Mataī, as they had won the chant-off.
However, I say good job to the other Whānau as we all contributed lots to athletics and kept on running! BIG shoutout to the teachers, Whānau Leaders and Peer Supporter Leaders! We couldn’t have had this amazing day without them, so a big thank you from everybody to those guys!
We all agree Athletics Day is a big part of keeping the Pak spirit up, and believe me, we sure did show a lot of it!
