As the first model stepped onto the runway, the audience erupted in cheers, captivated by the stunning creations that adorned the stage at Pakuranga College’s much-anticipated fashion event. From the African Cultural Group to Toi Wearable Arts, the sky was the limit for the categories and outfits that people dreamt of and crafted for the runway!
On Thursday 12 September, a few colleagues and I attended a night of fashion. Whether it was fashion on the runway or fashion on the sidelines, we all gathered there on that night for that reason. Fashion is one of the most noticeable and oldest arts, as well as one that is constantly developing, with designers constantly thinking and tinkering. From playing around with the idea of a simple shirt and pants to extravagant dresses that are specifically hand crafted for top-notch events such as the Met Gala.
The phrase “fashion is whatever you want it to be” is thrown around daily, though at this event you could clearly see that phrase put into action. One of the most memorable categories of the night was the seven outfits completely handmade by one of the hosts of the night, Hommer Hoo!
“That category is gonna be the best! No bias of course, but look out for that!”
Those were some wise words from him! Now, some wise words from a few models and fashion designers who were tasked with answering a question: Do you have any advice for young models and fashion designers?
“Be the most raw, truthful, true you. You know, be the most unique you can be I guess. Because in fashion there are so many inspirations you can take from nature, from other people, but I think it’s what you are, what you represent, that’s the best thing.”
Hommer“I was way too scared to do this show last year as a Fabric Technology student. But I just walked down the aisle before, and it was so much fun! So just go for it!”
Isabella“Honestly, just try your best. Try anything new. It’s amazing to see all the crazy designs and concepts that people come up with. Use your imagination, you can make anything!”
Savannah“I definitely think time management is a big one for me, that’s what I struggle with mostly. Take your time.”
Lily
As with every fashion show all around the world, from high profile to simple like ours, it showcased breathtaking designs that were really pulled out of the designers’ imaginations.
The fashion at our show was dashing, and I know the gowns, the suits, the ties, and the shoes, will be daring and ground-breaking next year as well!
“Fashion has to reflect who you are, what you feel at the moment and where you’re going.”
