We were fortunate to be a part of the Year 12 PILOT programme, which proved to be an extraordinary and enriching experience. This programme brought together Pasifika students from various schools, teaching us about leadership experiences for the future. The event was organised by MIT and university students.
The PILOT programme offered us the chance to hear from leaders who shared their personal journeys and the challenges they overcame to achieve their current success. Their stories were not only inspiring but also served as powerful reminders of what is possible with perseverance and dedication.
Considering that the Pasifika community at Pakūranga College is small, being surrounded by so many people from our community and immersed in our shared culture was a truly heartwarming experience. It was profoundly moving to be surrounded by so many individuals who share our culture and values, creating a sense of unity and belonging that was deeply fulfilling.
One particular takeaway from the programme that has stayed with me was the advice to “never live down to stereotypes perpetuated by the media and others.” This message resonated deeply, reinforcing the importance of rising above limiting stereotypes and defining ourselves on our own terms.
