The New Zealand Government’s implementation of a phone ban in schools has garnered significant support from many parents and educators, whilst also raising some concerns. Although smartphones are now a part of everyday life, they do pose particular challenges in education and the wellbeing of our young people.
This phone ban is designed to minimise distractions, improve focus, and foster a better learning environment for all. It aims to improve academic performance, increase attention spans, and reduce the risks of mental health issues.
Ensuring student compliance is challenging. However, talking to your child about the benefits in an age-appropriate way will help them understand the broader context. Teaching young people responsible technology use and setting clear boundaries is essential.
