Students Catch Gold at Junior AKSS
The recent Junior AKSS competition provided some of the best results Pakuranga College ultimate frisbee has seen in a long time!
It was the first outdoor tournament for our girls, who have all been playing for under a year. Despite a first game vs reigning champions: Epsom Girls’ Grammar, the girls kept their spirits and energy throughout the day.
They did a fantastic job, beating Selwyn College and Baradene to again meet EGGS, this time in the final. Whilst Epsom still proved to be too big of a challenge at this stage, the experience was invaluable in the run-up to nationals, and 2nd place is a huge achievement for a first tournament!
The boys had a cracker of a day. They played a solid game and were able to put less experienced teams away with ease. A loss to Auckland Grammar in pool play and a close semi-final vs Takapuna Grammar took them to the final for a rematch vs the Grammar boys. A huge first point saw some of our newer players almost break to score on AGS, however, they took a 3-1 lead. The Pakuranga boys went to work after that, with Billy catching a massive layout grab from Andy, a high disc seeing Blake score his second Callahan of the day, and Ridhwan managing two footblocks on Grammar’s biggest thrower. The boys clinched the game in a 5-4 comeback, winning the AKSS Junior Open Championships and becoming the first Pakuranga College team to win a final in more than 12 years.
It was awesome having the girls there to cheer the boys on during their final, and to see some of the less experienced players shine and show some real potential. An absolutely huge effort from everyone. They had an amazing day.
1st XI Cricket Success
Our 1st XI Cricket team has had a resurgence this term. The team combined with experience and youth, have gone 3 for 3 this term so far and have their final game of the season this Saturday 18 November.
Their first game was a tight competition against Takapuna Grammar, where we won 92-88 with 8 wickets remaining. The team then went on to play Liston College, winning 187-151. A massive congratulations to captain, Bhav Minhas, who scored 105 not out.
The team’s most recent win was against Long Bay College: 90-81, where the team defended their total brilliantly.
Best of luck for your final match boys!
