This year, three students participated in the ASB Polyfest Speech Competition. On Wednesday 2 April, Joey Breed (Year 10) spoke on the Samoan stage accompanied by a group of Pasifika student supporters. The following day, Pasifika student leaders supported Maria Tofilau (Year 12) on the Samoan stage, and Meleane Lomu (Year 11), who spoke on the Tongan stage. Despite the grey weather, all participants and supporters enjoyed hearing the languages spoken so beautifully and had the opportunity to engage with a variety of Pasifika vendors.

A special congratulations to Maria, who secured 2nd place in the Samoan speech competition. Her speech centered on the enduring legacy of Gagana Samoa, utilising the tatau as a poignant example. On Saturday, Maria received her well-deserved prize, celebrating this achievement with her family.

The Pasifika Development team would like to express our deepest gratitude to the families of Maria, Joey, and Meleane, whose unwavering support was instrumental throughout the students’ preparation. From one student practising their speech with family over video call in Samoa to another mother dressing her daughter for her speech, their commitment ensured that Maria, Joey, and Meleane could proudly showcase their language and heritage. We are forever grateful.
