RYPEN (Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment) is an annual weekend-long leadership and personal development camp organised by the local Rotary clubs across Auckland. RYPEN aims to help senior students develop leadership skills and build self-confidence and resilience. As well as promote cooperation and foster a sense of community through participating in volunteer work while at the camp. This year the Pakuranga Rotary Club was able to sponsor two Pakuranga College students – Margot Schmidt (Nīkau) and Palak Parmer (Pōhutukawa) to attend the camp held at the Shakespear Regional Park.

Margot’s Highlights

My highlight of RYPEN was all the outdoor activities, in particular raft building! It was very empowering to collaborate with others and learn new skills such as knot tying which allowed us to paddle across the beautiful beach. The whole weekend was device-free which did intimidate me at first, but I’m really glad I had the opportunity to disconnect from the outside world and make new connections with students all across Auckland. I would definitely recommend attending RYPEN to any students who enjoy the outdoors and want to step outside of their comfort zone.

Palak’s Highlights

One of the most memorable moments of my RYPEN experience was during the orienteering challenge. The thrill of navigating the open land and dense trees with just a map was both exhilarating and enlightening. The tech-free weekend truly pushed us to develop our problem-solving skills and build stronger bonds with our peers. Stepping away from screens and embracing the outdoors made the experience more rewarding and enjoyable. I would wholeheartedly recommend RYPEN to anyone eager to test their leadership skills and forge lasting friendships in a unique and immersive environment.
