This term our very own Te Tai O Pakuranga, welcomed new year students into the group. They welcomed them with traditional Māori performing arts songs and a haka, such as Me Manawa Whenua and Papa Nick.
Everyone played a game (Pukana) and was taught the school haka. The group taught the new tauira (students) the syllables and kupu (words) of the haka, as well as the history behind who made it. They showed that Kapa Haka is a built effort to work together. As everyone was getting to know one another and having a good time when they finished off the day with a full-out haka. It was a beautiful sight as everyone was together and giving their all.
Many more days will come when everyone will be together, learning and laughing again, as more events are coming for Te Tai o Pakuranga. In the resounding echoes of their voices in the school hall, everyone united as one to practise and embrace their heritage. With every step and note they held, they symbolised the spirit of aroha (love), spreading it far and wide. They showed us the power of their culture, inspiring many more to come and unite. So join in their song, even if you are just on the side and celebrate the unwavering spirit of these young tauira (students).
